Many countries require a background check from anyone applying for residency. For citizens of the United States, that generally means getting one from the FBI - a report from your local or state police department often isn't enough. But how can you get one if you're already living overseas? Here's what you can do to get your FBI criminal history check done for residency in Paraguay. Go to the US Embassy at Mariscal Lopez Avenue 1776 in Asuncion. After going through security, tell them you need the FBI fingerprint forms to apply for residency. You should get a card for the fingerprints, an application form, and a form to fill out if you're going to use a credit card to pay the FBI for processing. Go to the Interpol office at Coronel Gracia 468. The US embassy website says that you can have the results sent to the embassy, but I was given other instructions when I actually asked at the embassy. Interpol will charge you 50,000 Guaranis, around US$ 12.50, to be fingerprinted. Now, you need someone reliable back in the US to handle all the mailing for you. They will need to get some money orders and pre-paid envelopes to send the fingerprints to the FBI and the results to the Paraguayan consulate in the US for legalization. Fill out the forms, making sure that you fill in the part of the FBI application form that says to return the results to your friend's address. Take your fingerprints and the FBI forms to the FedEx office in Asuncion at Avenida Espana 436 at the corner of Dr. Bestard. It cost almost $50 for me to send everything to the US. Send the following instructions to your friend in the US: INSTRUCTIONS TO YOUR FRIEND IN THE US Get a money order for $18.00, payable to "Treasury of the United States", unless you want to pay them by credit card. One destination address should be your friend's address, for the FBI to return their results. The final destination address should be the Paraguayan Embassy in the United States Get a prepaid FedEx envelope to be sent from the Paraguayan Embassy in Washington D.C. to your address in Paraguay In the Priority Mail envelope addressed to the FBI, send the following: Fingerprints, from the FedEx package you sent your friend FBI application form, from the FedEx package you sent your friend FBI Letter, see below $18 money order Priority Mail envelope with your friend's address as the destination address When your friend receives the FBI results back, send the following in the Priority Mail envelope addressed to the Paraguayan Embassy: FBI results Paraguay Embassy Letter, see below Pre-paid FedEx envelope to your address in Paraguay $35 money order TEXT FOR FBI LETTER FBI CJIS Division, Enclosed is a money order for $18 for an international background check. Please perform a background check to be use for residency in Paraguay and return it in the enclosed envelope. If you have any questions, please contact me at YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS Thank you, TEXT FOR PARAGUAYAN EMBASSY LETTER Enclosed is a money order for $35. Please legalize my FBI background check results and return them in the enclosed prepaid FedEx return envelope which provides tracking. If you have any questions, please contact me at YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS Thank you, Once all that is done, you just need to wait. It may take up to two months for the FBI to send the results back, and don't expect anything very official looking.
