Every time expats go to Paraguay and decide to live there, there is that huge misconception that all you need to learn is Spanish. English is rarely spoken in the country, so the idea is to learn Spanish and that is what you will all need in order to navigate yourself around the country. This can be a bit misleading because there is actually a language much more spoken than Spanish.

Guarani is a language that is uniquely Paraguayan. Guarani as a language among the locals is so famous that outside the capital city of Asuncion and big cities, most of what people will understand is already Guarani. There are really cases wherein people, especially those living in the rural regions of Paraguay, could not understand how to speak Spanish very well.

Guarani is a language that used to be spoken only by the Guarani people who live in Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil, and Bolivia. However, it is in Paraguay where the language became widely spoken, spreading to those who are not even of Guarani ethnic origin. It is estimated that roughly 88% of all Paraguayans know how to speak the language. Even those who are fluent in Spanish are actually capable of communicating well in Guarani.

It is not uncommon for many foreigners not to learn how to speak Guarani, though. As a language, Guarani is often considered to be less prestigious than Spanish, so instead of the visitors learning how to speak Guarani, it is the rural folks who try to speak in Spanish even though they find it difficult to do so.

However, if you want to leave a good impression among the rural Paraguayans, it is suggested that you try to learn how to speak Guarani. Speaking it suddenly makes a conversation more personal and give you the image sincerity, something that you should work on if you want to make your stay in the country even more memorable. That's what any tourist should do in order to assimilate well with his/her environment anyway.
