Gran Chaco: Paraguay's Outback

If Australia has its Outback, then Panama has its Gran Chaco, a wild, semi-arid, and sparesely populated region located northwest of Paraguay and is often dubbed as the continent's Green Hell. The greater Gran Chaco area is divided between Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Brazil. It has always been disputed territory since the early 19th century, and was the location of the bloody wars that ignited in South America years back.

The Gran Chaco is composed mainly of lowlands that do not rise up to more 300 meters above sea level, with 125 meters as the region-wide average. It is separated from the country's Paranena's region by the Rio Paraguay. The Gran Chaco itself is further divided into two sub-regions in Paraguay, the Alto Chaco, which is closer to the border with Bolivia, and Bajo Chaco, which is bordering on the Rio Paraguay.

The Gran Chaco is very comparable with Australia's Outback due to its arid environment and high temperature. The temperature across the region is considered to be among the highest anywhere in the continent. The Alto Chaco is more arid and more sparsely vegetated, while Bajo Chaco has more or less a savanna landscape complete with palm trees, tropical high grass areas, and insects in certain regions. Despite the scorching heat, the soil in the Gran Chaco are highly fertile, which resulted to it being a major source of timber for Paraguay.

The ecosystem of the Gran Chaco remains up for studying by scientists. The arid climate and rich soil gave rise to a unique ecosystem that still needs to be further understood. Among the animals closely identified with the Gran Chaco are the guanaco, the Chacoan Peccary, and the armadillo. In recent years, the ecosystem is greatly damaged by agriculture, although certain regions protected by environmentalist groups have been set up in order to preserve the ecosystem.

For all its worth, the Gran Chaco region is one worth visiting if you intend to see the more rural and the wilder side of Paraguay.
