Paraguay Expat and Travel ArticlesThe Beautiful Things That You Will See in Areguá
I like capital cities like Asuncion because of their size and energy. In large cities such as this one, the city almost always never sleeps. If you are into this kind of vibe, staying in the city and discovering for yourself what it hides in its corners will always be a pleasurable activity.
However, there is something that I like better than big and vibrant cities, and those are smaller cities with a colonial, small-town vibe. These cities are large enough to, well, get called as 'cities', but they are small enough to make people feel like they know everyone around town. In the case of Paraguay, something like Areguá fits this purpose very well. Areguá is the capital city of Central. Located about 28 km from Asuncion, Areguá is best known for its good geographical position, with rolling hills and unique rock formations (it is said that there are only three other locations where there are such rock formations) in the background while getting situated just right beside the famed Ypacaral Lake. It is the capital of a Paraguayan department, but its population of just about 70,000 still makes it somehow manageable with a homogenous colonial vibe. It used to be a favorite summer destination of people living in Asuncion during the colonial era, especially for the poets, artists, and other intellectuals. The Koi hill that is located just beside the city is known for the formation of hexagonal sandstones, for which it was declared as a protected site by the national government owing to its uniqueness. Among Paraguayans, Areguá is also known as the "City of Strawberries," which was given to the city because it is its major crop produce, contributing significantly to the city economy and establishing itself as the largest and most delicious strawberry producers in all of Paraguay. During August, the harvest month, a strawberry festival is held to showcase all the possible agricultural products that may be derived from the fruit. Areguá's charm and long colonial history is something that you should not miss. Don't forget to visit the city's colonial core and take in a breathe of Paraguayan history, along with the lake scene and nature trails. Have fun! You can talk about...
