China, Taiwan, Paraguay, and the National Congress

Thank author of this post/comment

In the crazy world of China-Taiwan relations, any other country in the world can only maintain diplomatic relations with only one of the two parties, as China will not maintain ties with any other country that recognizes Taiwan as a sovereign state. In that regard, Paraguay is only among the very few countries in the planet that has diplomatic ties with Taiwan instead of the People's Republic of China.

It is also the only country in South America to have this kind of diplomatic relations with the Far Eastern nation. Although not a large country in itself, Paraguay is actually the largest country to recognize Taiwan instead of China.

As such, Taiwan has been very generous towards Paraguay in terms of economic aid and similar other "freebies" that includes funding for some of the greatest and magnificent-looking structures in Paraguay's cities. One of the most prominent among them is the National Congress, a building that cost $20 million and funded by the Taiwanese government.

It is considered to be among the most striking buildings in the city, with its glass facade facing the adjacent river bank, that reflect against it. If you are a fan of magnificent government buildings, this one from Asuncion is something that you should drop by during a visit to Paraguay.

China certainly has greater capability to fund these kinds of magnificent buildings, but it is supposed that the country won't bother to spend that much plus annual aid to a South American country just to get Paraguay to turn against its old ally. But seeing that relations across the Strait are becoming better, there is no reason for Paraguay to turn around anytime soon.
